Sparks inside a running microwave get your attention fast, and hitting stop is the right instinct. Nine times out of ten it is stray metal, a charred waveguide cover or chipped cavity paint, each under $20.

A sustained arc burns through the mica cover in under a minute, then starts eating the waveguide metal behind it, turning an $8 repair into a magnetron. Paper, foil and greasy splatter all catch fire. Unplug the oven at the wall before any hand goes into the cavity, and never take the outer case off: the capacitor holds several thousand volts long after the plug is out.

Does it spark no matter what is inside? Empty the cavity, put one cup of water in a plain glass mug, and run ten seconds with a finger on the stop button. Cancel at the first spark and never let it arc more than a second or two, because every extra second widens the damage. Arcing with only that mug inside means the fault is the oven. Sparks with one dish only means the load.

  1. 1Unplug the oven at the wall before any hand goes into the cavity, then empty it and look under the turntable. A twist tie, foil scrap or fork is the most common answer.

  4. 4Plug it back in only with hands clear and the door shut, and never run it empty: with no load the energy reflects back and arcs by itself. Leave a cup of water in and stop at the first spark.

1. Stray Metal or the Wrong Dish

Metal reflects microwaves instead of absorbing them. A thin edge, a sharp point, or two pieces millimetres apart concentrate charge until the air ionizes.

  1. 1Unplug the oven, then lift the turntable out and check underneath, in the roller ring and in the corners for foil or a twist tie.
  2. 2Hold the plate to the light. Real gold or platinum banding arcs on contact, as does metallic ink.
  3. 3Check packaging too: foil lined lids and cartons, tea bag staples and steam bag strips all arc.
  4. 4If you shield with foil, keep it smooth and an inch clear of every wall. Folds concentrate the field.
  5. 5With hands clear and the door shut, plug it back in and rerun the water test with a plain glass mug and nothing else, stopping at the first spark. No sparks means nothing here to repair.

2. A Burnt Waveguide Cover

That tan panel on the right wall, or sometimes the roof, is the waveguide cover, a mica sheet the microwaves come through. Splatter soaks in and cooks to carbon; carbon conducts, so the oven arcs there and widens the hole every cycle. This is the commonest fault needing real repair.

  1. 1Unplug the oven at the wall. This job stays inside the cavity, so the outer case never comes off and you never go near the capacitor.
  2. 2Judge the panel under a torch. Light staining wipes off. Black scorch, a blister, a crumbly patch or a hole means replace it.
  3. 3Photograph the orientation, then undo the one or two small screws or release the plastic tabs.
  4. 4Trace the old cover onto a universal mica sheet, about $8, cut it with scissors on a worktop rather than over the open cavity, and mark the screw holes.
  5. 5Scrub the metal opening behind the cover with a plastic scraper. If that metal is pitted or burnt through, stop and price a new oven.
  6. 6Vacuum the cavity, turntable and roller ring before anything runs: mica off cuts, scraped carbon and a dropped screw all arc.
  7. 7Fit the new panel, shut the door, keep hands clear, then plug in and run a cup of water for thirty seconds, ready to stop at the first spark. Sparks on a fresh panel mean the panel was never the cause, so read the door and magnetron sections before cutting another.

3. Chipped Cavity Paint or Rusted Rack Supports

  2. 2Test the rusted spot before any abrasive touches it. Press it, then shine a torch inside the cavity, shut the door, darken the room and watch the case vents and seams. If the spot flexes, flakes through, or light escapes there, stop: a hole leaks microwaves, so the oven gets replaced, not patched. Sanding a thin spot is how a pinhole gets made.
  3. 3Sand a sound rust bloom to bright metal with 220 grit paper, wipe with rubbing alcohol and let it dry.
  4. 4Brush on paint sold for microwave cavities, about $15, in two thin coats and give it the label cure time, usually four hours.
  5. 5Never use ordinary appliance spray or enamel. It is not rated for the field or the heat, and it blisters and arcs.
  6. 6Vacuum or damp wipe the cavity, turntable and roller ring, because sanding dust is steel and loose steel arcs. Only then plug back in, hands clear and door shut, and test with a cup of water, stopping at the first spark.

4. Arcing at the Door Edge or Latch

Sparks at the seam where door meets frame, not inside the cavity, are a different fault. That seam is a choke seal, a channel trapping microwaves at the doorway. Grease, crumbs or a door that no longer sits flat leave it arcing, pitting the metal and leaking.

  1. 1Unplug the oven and degrease both mating faces, the flat band around the door and the frame it presses against. Grease film is the usual reason.
  2. 2Inspect the window screen for a dent, bulge or missing section, then press each corner of the closed door. A proud corner or a cracked hinge leaves an uneven gap.
  3. 3Look along the seam metal for pitting and burn marks, which mean the arc has already eaten into the choke.
  4. 4A cracked door, broken hinge, damaged screen or pitted choke is where you stop, and where the oven stops too. Leave it unplugged until a technician has measured it, and do not keep cooking in it meanwhile. Leaking microwaves are invisible and painless, and the legal limit is 5 milliwatts per square centimetre at 5 centimetres.
  5. 5Only if door, screen, hinges and choke are all sound, plug back in with hands clear and the door shut, and run a cup of water, stopping at the first spark.

5. A Failing Magnetron or High Voltage Part

Clean cavity, new mica cover, no metal in sight, and it still arcs. Now the trouble is upstream: a dying magnetron arcs internally, and a failing diode or capacitor makes the same loud buzz.

  1. 1Do not take the case off to look. The capacitor stores several thousand volts for hours after the oven is unplugged, which makes this the one appliance repair that kills people.
  2. 2Confirm the first four causes are genuinely ruled out. A technician charges the same visit fee either way.
  3. 3Match the pattern against what the ten second test already showed, rather than running it again: a buzz that changes pitch, a hot electronics smell, sparks near the waveguide opening, cold food. Cold food alone is covered under why a microwave runs but does not heat.
  4. 4Do the sums. A magnetron is $50 to $120 in parts plus a $90 to $150 service call, against $90 to $150 for a new countertop oven. A built in unit, at $350 to $600, is worth repairing.
  5. 5If it keeps tripping the breaker or blowing the fuse in its plug where fitted, smells of burning, or arcs with only water inside, unplug it and leave it unplugged. That is a fire risk, not a project.
