Your Frigidaire oven is showing F10, and you want to know whether that is a nuisance code or something serious. It is the second one. On most Frigidaire and Electrolux built ranges of the last fifteen years, F10 is the runaway temperature code: the board believes the cavity is climbing past the temperature it was told to hold. Sometimes it really is. Sometimes a cheap sensor is lying about it.

Start with one question. Is the oven hot right now, or has it been sitting cold? Hot with F10 on the display means an active overheat until proven otherwise. Cold for hours, with F10 appearing on its own or as a bake cycle ended, points at a failed probe or a corroded connector, and that is a 30 minute job with a multimeter. The ohm readings and part prices below come from electric ranges; a gas Frigidaire throws the same F10 and gets the same probe check, but its shut off valve has to be closed before the range is moved. F10 is the mirror image of an oven that will not heat at all, and the more urgent of the two.

On some failures the bake relay inside the control board is welded closed, so the element stays powered while the display shows the fault. Technicians have found cavities well past 600 degrees with F10 already flashing. Turn the range off at the breaker, not at the touch pad, and leave it off. The touch pad talks to the same board that just failed.

Start With These 30-Second Checks

  1. 1Switch the range off at the circuit breaker before anything else. The touch pad is not enough, because a stuck relay sits downstream of it.
  2. 2Leave the oven door shut. F10 means the cavity may have run far past its setpoint, and opening the door lets that heat out into your face. It stays shut until it is cold.
  3. 3Write down whether the oven was hot, mid cycle or stone cold when F10 appeared, and whether you saw the bake element glowing orange while F10 was already displayed. Cold F10 points at the sensor circuit; a glowing element with F10 showing is the strongest sign that the board has failed.
  4. 4Read the model number without opening the oven door. On most Frigidaire ranges the rating label sits on the frame behind the bottom storage drawer, which pulls out with the door shut; if yours is only on the frame behind the oven door, it waits until the oven is cold. Frigidaire has shipped several board generations and older two digit boards do not all use the same code table, so check your tech sheet before buying a part.
  5. 5Think back to when F10 appeared: only during a self clean, or during normal baking as well? A probe slightly out of spec usually fails self clean first, because that cycle drives the cavity toward 900 degrees. Do not start a self clean to find out. That cycle locks the door for hours on a fault you already know about.

1. The Dangerous Case: a Bake Relay Stuck Closed

The elements are switched by relays on the control board. When a relay welds shut, the element gets power no matter what the board asks, and F10 is the board saying it noticed but cannot stop it.

  1. 1Leave the breaker off. Everything here is done with the power off and the oven cooling.
  2. 2Give it several hours with the door closed. A cavity still hot two hours after the power went off was seriously overheated.
  3. 3Wait until the cavity is cold to the touch before the door is opened at all. After a runaway that takes three to four hours, not one. Then, with the power still off and the oven cold, check the bake element and the oven floor for discoloration, blistered porcelain or scorch marks. That is sustained overheat, not one bad reading.
  4. 4Only once the oven is fully cold: close the door, keep hands and tools out of the cavity, restore power at the breaker and watch the display without starting anything.
  5. 5If F10 returns with the oven cold and idle, or if you saw the element glowing while F10 showed, cut the breaker again and stop here. That is a control board job, not a probe swap.

2. Test the Oven Temperature Sensor

The RTD probe fails more often than anything else behind an F10. The board reads the whole oven temperature through that one part, so a drifted probe reports heat that is not there.

  1. 1Confirm at the panel that the breaker is off before a hand or a screwdriver goes into the cavity. Press a button on the touch pad: a dead display is your proof.
  2. 2Check that the cavity is cold, not just switched off. An F10 oven may have run past 600 degrees, and the walls, the element and the probe bracket stay hot enough to burn for hours after the power is cut. If the door glass is warm to the back of your hand, wait longer.
  3. 3Find the probe in the upper rear corner of the oven, usually left, on a bracket held by two screws.
  4. 4Remove the screws and pull the probe forward about four inches so the plug comes through the rear wall, then separate the two pin connector.
  5. 5Set a multimeter to ohms and read across the two terminals on the probe side at room temperature. A healthy Frigidaire RTD reads roughly 1080 to 1100 ohms; more than about 50 ohms off that is drifted, and an open circuit (OL on the meter) or a reading near zero is a definite failure.
  6. 6Read from each terminal to bare metal on the oven wall too. Any continuity there means the probe is shorting to ground and has to go.

Behind the rear panel the sensor plug looks like two or three other connectors on the same harness. One phone photo before you pull anything apart is the difference between a 30 minute job and an evening of guessing.

3. Check the Harness and Connector Behind the Range

A perfect probe still reads wrong if its connection to the board is corroded. It turns up on ranges next to a dishwasher, and produces exactly the same F10 as a dead sensor.

  1. 1Breaker off, and confirmed off. You are about to open a panel that carries 240 volts. On a gas range close the shut off valve behind the appliance as well, and move the range only as far as the flexible connector reaches without tension on it.
  2. 2Pull the range forward only as far as you need to reach the back, and keep the oven door shut and empty while it stands free. If the anti tip bracket blocks the move, undo its screw and from that moment treat the range as unsecured: nothing on the door, no leaning on it, nobody small in the kitchen. The bracket goes back in before the range is pushed home and used again.
  3. 3Remove the screws holding the rear access panel.
  4. 4Follow the two sensor wires to their plug and look for green or white powder on the pins, a melted housing, or a wire pulled from its crimp.
  5. 5Unplug and reseat the connector two or three times to scrape the contacts, then check it clicks fully home.
  6. 6If the insulation is brittle or the pins are burnt, fit a replacement pigtail instead of cleaning it. Burnt pins mean the joint has been running hot.

4. Replace the Temperature Sensor

If the probe measured out of spec, this is your repair. The part costs less than an hour of anyone's labor.

  1. 1Breaker off, confirmed at the panel, before the range is opened again.
  2. 2Order the probe by model number. Aftermarket probes run about $20 to $30, the genuine Frigidaire part $40 to $60. Both come with the connector attached.
  3. 3Unscrew the old probe, feed its wire back through the hole in the rear oven wall, then feed the new wire through the same hole.
  4. 4Push the connector together until it clicks, and screw the probe onto the cavity wall.
  5. 5Refit the rear panel, push the range back, reseat the anti tip bracket, take hands and tools out of the cavity, and only then switch the breaker on.
  6. 6Stay in the kitchen for this test and keep a hand near the breaker. Set the oven to 350 with an oven thermometer on the middle rack. Cut the breaker straight away if the thermometer climbs past about 375 and keeps rising, if the element stays glowing after the oven reaches temperature, or if F10 comes back: the sensor was not the fault. A good repair settles within about 25 degrees of 350 and holds there for the full 20 minutes.

5. When the Control Board Is the Cause

If the probe reads correctly and the harness is clean, what is left is the electronic oven control, the board behind the touch pad. That is the expensive end of F10, and the end where the oven overheats on its own, so the breaker stays off until the new board is in.

  1. 1Keep the breaker off while you wait for parts. A board that fails with a welded relay is a fire risk, not an inconvenience.
  2. 2Take the part number off the board itself, not only off the range sticker. The same model shipped with more than one revision.
  3. 3Budget $150 to $250 for the board alone plus about an hour of work. A shop doing the same job usually lands between $300 and $400 with labor.
