LG Refrigerator ER FF Error? The Freezer Fan, Step by Step

The display reads ER FF, the fridge section is getting warm, and the freezer may still feel cold. FF stands for freezer fan, and the code means the control board is not seeing that fan turn. Before you price a motor: on most LG refrigerators showing this code the motor is fine. It is physically blocked by ice.

The question that tells you which fault you have is whether the fan is blocked or dead, and you answer it safely at the end of the defrost rather than now. Unplug the unit, take out the freezer drawers, and look through the vents at the back for solid white ice. If you can see it packed in there, you already have your answer.

Start With These 30-Second Checks

1. 1Unplug the refrigerator at the wall before you reach inside past the drawers.
2. 2Feel the fresh food compartment. Warm fridge plus cold freezer is the classic signature of a stopped freezer fan, because the fridge gets its cold air from the freezer.

5. 5Look at the drain at the bottom rear of the freezer floor for a plug of ice, which is often the same underlying fault.

1. Defrost It Fully, Which Takes Longer Than You Think

This is the repair for most ER FF codes. It is not difficult, it is just slow, and the most common reason it fails is people stopping after six hours.

1. 1Unplug the refrigerator at the wall. Do not rely on turning cooling off at the panel, because you want the whole thing dead while you work around the fan.
2. 2Move everything from the freezer into a cooler with ice packs, and use up or discard anything from the fridge that has been above 5 degrees for more than two hours.
3. 3Prop both doors open. A folded towel in the hinge side works better than wedging the seal.
4. 4Lay towels along the floor at the front. A full defrost releases a surprising amount of water and it finds the gap under the door first.

6. 6Leave it 24 hours minimum, 48 if the build up was heavy. Feel behind the rear panel vents before you call it done: any cold hard patch means ice is still in there.

2. Clear the Defrost Drain While It Is Open

The ice that blocked the fan usually came from meltwater that could not get away. Clearing the drain while everything is already defrosted is what stops it happening again in a month.

1. 1Confirm the refrigerator is still unplugged before you reach into the back of the freezer.
2. 2Find the drain hole at the bottom rear of the freezer floor, usually a small opening in a shallow channel.
3. 3Pour a cup of warm water slowly into it. It should disappear and reappear in the tray above the compressor at the back.
4. 4If it backs up, work a length of soft plastic tubing or a pipe cleaner gently down it. Nothing metal and nothing sharp.
5. 5Repeat the warm water test until it runs away freely.

3. Check the Fan Turns Freely by Hand

With the ice gone, this tells you whether you have fixed it or whether the motor is genuinely dead. It is the only fan test in this guide, and it happens with the plug out.

1. 1Keep the refrigerator unplugged. This step involves a hand near a fan blade and that is not negotiable.
2. 2Reach the fan blade at the rear of the freezer compartment and turn it gently with a finger.
3. 3It should spin freely for a moment and coast. Gritty resistance or a blade that will not move means a failed motor even after defrosting.

4. Power It Back Up and Read the Result

The code does not always clear itself the moment the fault goes away, which sends people back to a fan that is already fine.

5. If ER FF Returns Within a Few Weeks

This is the important distinction and it is the one people miss. A fridge that ices up again quickly does not have a fan problem. It has a defrost problem, and defrosting it again just buys another few weeks.

2. 2Do not simply defrost it again and hope. The ice will rebuild in the same place for the same reason.
3. 3Tell whoever you call that it returned after a full defrost. That single sentence points them at the defrost heater, the bimetal thermostat and the control board rather than the fan.

If the compartment never gets cold at all rather than warming gradually, that is a different fault, and a fridge that is not cooling covers it. If the freezer is running colder than it should instead, see a freezer that is too cold.

6. When to Call a Pro

Defrosting, clearing the drain and turning a fan blade by hand with the plug out are all owner jobs. Anything behind the evaporator panel is not, because the coil is thin tubing under pressure and a puncture is not repairable at home.
