Samsung Washer 5E or SE Error? It Is the Drain, Here Is the Fix

The machine stops part way through, the drum is still full, and the panel shows 5E. If your washer is a few years older it might show SE instead. These are the same code. The display cannot draw a proper S, so it draws a 5, and both mean the same thing: the machine asked the pump to empty the drum, watched the water level, and did not see it drop in time.

One question narrows this down fast. When the machine retries, can you hear a steady electrical whirr from the bottom front? If yes, the pump is running and something is blocking the water. If that corner is silent, the pump or its supply is the issue, and that changes what you do next.

Start With These 30-Second Checks

1. 1Unplug the machine at the wall before reaching behind it.
2. 2Look behind the machine for a kinked drain hose, or one crushed flat against the wall.
3. 3Check how far the drain hose goes into the standpipe. Pushed deep enough to seal, the machine siphons, and that reads as a drain failure. Your manual gives the maximum depth for your model; it is usually around 15 cm.
4. 4Check the hose height against the figure in your manual rather than a number from the internet, because it differs across the Samsung range. Too high and the pump cannot lift the water.
5. 5Pour a jug of water down the standpipe. If it backs up, the blockage is the plumbing, not the washer.
6. 6Stand clear, plug it back in and listen during a retry. A whirr means a restriction; silence means the pump.

1. Empty It Through the Small Hose First

On a front loader, behind the panel at the bottom front, next to the round filter cap, there is a short hose with a plug in it. Samsung put it there for this job.

1. 1Unplug the machine at the wall before you open the panel.
2. 2If the cycle stopped during the wash, leave it an hour. The water can be hot.
3. 3Pop the bottom front panel off. On most Samsung front loaders it unclips with a coin in the slot at one end.
4. 4Pull the small drain hose out to its full length and hold it over a shallow baking tray.
5. 5Pull the plug, let the tray fill, refit the plug, empty the tray, repeat. Expect four or five trays.
6. 6Keep going until the hose runs dry. The filter housing will still hold some, which is what the towels are for.

2. Open the Debris Filter and Clear It (Front Loaders)

This is the part that fixes most 5E codes on a front loader. The filter catches coins, hair grips, buttons and the felted lint that builds into a solid plug over a year or two.

1. 1Confirm the machine is still unplugged before your hand goes behind the panel.
2. 2Leave the tray and towels in place. Half a litre always follows the filter out.
3. 3Turn the filter cap anticlockwise and draw it out slowly.
4. 4Pull out everything in the housing. Lint often comes out as a grey felt disc that looks like part of the filter itself.
5. 5Rinse the filter under a tap and wipe the thread on the cap clean. Grit on the thread is why people cannot reseal it afterwards.
6. 6Reach in and turn the impeller with a finger. It should spin with light resistance. A coin against a vane stops it dead, and that alone causes 5E.
7. 7Take your hand out, refit the cap hand tight and clip the panel back on before the machine goes near a socket.

3. Clear the Drain Hose and Standpipe

If the filter was already clean, or the code returns within a few loads, or your machine has no reachable filter, the restriction is downstream of the pump.

1. 1Unplug the machine at the wall before you move it or handle the hoses.
2. 2Ease it forward far enough to reach the back without straining the hoses.
3. 3Run your hand along the whole drain hose feeling for a kink or a hard flattened patch.
4. 4Clear the standpipe with a jug of hot, not boiling, water and a bottle brush if it is slow. Boiling water can soften plastic waste fittings.
5. 5To test the machine's own flow, pull the hose out of the standpipe and wedge the end securely in a bucket so it cannot whip out.
6. 6Step back with both hands clear, plug it in and run a drain and spin. Fast flow here but not before means the standpipe is blocked.
7. 7Unplug again before refitting the hose, and set it at the depth and height your manual specifies.

4. When That Corner Is Silent

No noise at all during a drain attempt means the filter is not your answer. Either the pump has failed or it is not getting power.

1. 1Unplug the machine before doing anything else.
2. 2On a front loader, clear the filter anyway and turn the impeller by hand. A seized impeller can stall a healthy motor into silence.
3. 3Take your hand out of the housing, refit the cap and clip the panel back on. Only then does the plug go back in.
4. 4Check the machine is on its own socket and not sharing an extension lead with something heavy.
5. 5Stand clear and run a drain cycle. If the impeller turned freely and the code returns straight away, stop. The pump or the board comes next and both mean panels off.
6. 6Get your model number off the sticker inside the door before you call. Samsung pumps vary across the WF, WW and WA ranges.

5. Test It Before You Trust It

Do not prove the repair with a full load of wet washing. Prove it empty, where a failure costs you nothing.

1. 1Check the filter cap is seated and the bottom panel is clipped on before the plug goes back in.
2. 2Plug the machine in and run a rinse and spin with the drum empty.
3. 3Watch the whole cycle rather than walking away.
4. 4Check the drain hose end if you can see it. You want strong steady flow, not a dribble.
5. 5Wipe under the machine with a dry paper towel afterwards. This is when a crushed filter seal announces itself.
6. 6If empty passes but a full load fails, the restriction is partial rather than gone. Go back to the standpipe.

6. When to Call a Pro
