LG Dishwasher OE Error: How to Get It Draining Again

OE on an LG dishwasher means the machine tried to pump the water out and it did not leave in time. You usually find it mid-cycle, with grey water standing in the bottom. It looks serious, but most OE codes come from a blocked filter or a hose problem you can fix without tools.

Ask one question first: did anything change under the sink recently? A new garbage disposal, a plumber's visit or a cabinet clear-out points to the drain path. If nothing changed, start with the filter. For drainage problems on any brand, see dishwasher not draining.

Start With These 30-Second Checks

1. 1Run the kitchen tap. If the sink itself drains slowly, the blockage is in the shared drain, not the dishwasher.
2. 2If you have a garbage disposal, run it briefly with cold water. A full disposal can back water up into the dishwasher hose.
3. 3Look under the sink for a kinked or crushed drain hose, especially behind bins and cleaning bottles.
4. 4Check whether your sink has an air gap, a small chrome cap next to the faucet. Water spilling out of it during a drain means it is clogged.

1. Clean the Filter Assembly

LG dishwashers catch food in a round filter in the floor of the tub, with a flat fine filter around it. When they clog, the pump cannot pull the water through.

1. 1Unplug the dishwasher or turn off its breaker, let hot water cool, and put on rubber gloves.
2. 2Pull out the lower rack, bail the standing water into a bucket with a cup, then sponge up the rest.
3. 3Twist the round filter counterclockwise and lift it out, then lift out the flat filter under it.
4. 4Rinse both under warm water, scrub the mesh with a soft brush, and look into the sump underneath for glass, seeds or bones. Remove them with pliers, not bare fingers.
5. 5Refit the flat filter, then twist the round filter back in clockwise until it locks. A filter that is not locked lets debris straight into the pump.

2. Straighten or Clear the Drain Hose

The drain hose runs from the back of the dishwasher to the sink drain or the disposal. A kink or a plug of grease anywhere along it stops the water.

1. 1Switch the dishwasher off and unplug it or turn off its breaker before you move anything under the sink.
2. 2Follow the hose from the cabinet to the drain and straighten any kinks or flattened sections.
3. 3With a towel and a bowl underneath, loosen the hose clamp at the sink end and pull the hose off. Some water will run out.
4. 4Flush the hose with hot tap water into the bowl, or push a long flexible brush through it to clear grease.
5. 5Refit it with a high loop under the counter, as your installation guide shows, and tighten the clamp. The loop stops sink water running back into the dishwasher.

3. Remove the Garbage Disposal Knockout Plug

New disposals come with a plastic plug inside the dishwasher inlet. If nobody knocked it out when the disposal was fitted, the dishwasher cannot drain from its very first run.

1. 1Switch the disposal off at the wall switch and at its breaker or plug, and unplug the dishwasher or turn off its breaker too.
2. 2Loosen the clamp and pull the dishwasher hose off the disposal's inlet nipple, with a bowl under it.
3. 3Look into the nipple with a flashlight. A solid plastic disc inside it is the knockout plug.
4. 4Place a flat screwdriver against the plug and tap the handle with a hammer until the plug breaks free into the disposal.
5. 5Fish the piece out of the disposal from above with long tongs or pliers, never your hand, then reconnect the hose and tighten the clamp.

4. Clean the Air Gap

Some kitchens have an air gap, a small chrome cylinder on the sink deck. It stops dirty sink water siphoning back into the dishwasher, and it clogs with food.

1. 1Unplug the dishwasher or turn off its breaker before you start.
2. 2Pull or twist off the chrome cover and unscrew the plastic cap underneath.
3. 3Clear the debris with a bottle brush or a bent piece of wire and flush it with hot water.
4. 4Refit the cap and cover, restore power and run a test drain, watching that no water spills out of the air gap.

5. When the Drain Pump Has Failed

If the filter, hose, disposal and air gap are all clear and OE still returns, the drain pump or its wiring is the likely cause.

1. 1Unplug the dishwasher or turn off its breaker, put on gloves, lift out the filters and check the sump opening once more for anything stuck, using pliers rather than fingers.
2. 2Refit the filters, then restore power with your hands clear, close the door and run a short program. No hum at all during the drain phase, or a hum with no water moving, points to the pump.
3. 3A replacement LG drain pump usually costs roughly $40 to $90. Fitting it means removing the lower panels of a mains powered appliance.
4. 4Unless you are confident with appliance wiring, book a technician; expect around $150 to $300 in total.

How to Clear OE After the Fix

OE clears once the dishwasher drains normally again.

1. 1Close the door, then restore power with your hands clear.
2. 2Turn the dishwasher on and cancel the stuck cycle the way your manual describes, or simply start the Rinse program.
3. 3Watch that the water leaves within a couple of minutes and none spills out of the air gap.
4. 4If OE comes straight back, the blockage is still there; start again at the filter.
